A patient was recently raped by other patients at the Ann Klein Forensic Center in West Trenton. The sexual assault allegedly occurred when a guard left his post.
The details of the assault have not yet been confirmed while the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office special victims unit continues its investigation. No one has yet been charged.
The Ann Klein Forensic Center is a state-run psychiatric center that houses 200 inpatients. Most residents come from state prisons or county jails and have been determined by the courts to be “incompetent to stand trial” or “not guilty by reason of insanity.”
Patient and Staff Assaults on the Rise
At least 5 patient-on-patient assaults have occurred at the facility in the first 6 months of 2018. Earlier this year, a patient was killed by another in a physical assault.
Also, several workers have complained of increasing attacks on staff members. Facility staff described events where a security officer suffered a brain bleed after an attack by a violent patient, and a doctor was knocked unconscious.
Significant Changes Announced Just Months Ago
The facility was cited last December for patient safety and care by the Joint Commission, a nonprofit accrediting organization.
But in August the State Health Department Commissioner announced changes as part of an 18-month plan turnaround plan to prevent losing accreditation. One problem that was specifically addressed is the “lock-in” policy where patients are locked in their rooms for hours when short-staffed or during shift changes. The corrective actions include:
Increasing staffing to halt the use of lockdowns
Reducing patient populations
Millions of dollars for safety capital improvements
These improvements cannot come too soon for victims of sexual assault at the Ann Klein Forensic Center.
