All a New Jersey high school junior wanted on New Year’s Day was some clean ski runs down the slopes at a Pocono Mountains Resort. Instead, the teen fell off a ski lift, falling 20 feet (6.1 meters) and landing on rocks resulting serious injuries to the back, head, and ribs. He was later pronounced dead from multiple blunt force trauma at a nearby hospital.
According to an article in People.com, it is unclear if the victim was using the chairlift bar to secure himself. The Blue Mountain Resort issued a statement declaring that they inspected the lift right after the accident and found it to be in good operating order with no mechanical defects.
Resort representatives also stated that ski lift attendants recommend that guests ride the chairlift with the bar down. The resort statement also confirmed that it will implement a new safety training program that includes chair simulation and rewards for using the chairlift restraint.
According to NJ.com, this is the third fatality at the Blue Mountain Resort within the past year. The others included a snowboarding accident and a collision between two skiers.
Did Negligence Cause This Fatal Ski Lift Accident?
It is possible that the resort may have been negligent and was responsible for the teen’s untimely death. Some potential causes of negligence in a ski resort accident include:
Defective equipment such as a chairlift.
Personal equipment defect like a ski or snowboard binding.
Poorly-maintained or designed terrain.
If a person is injured because of negligence, the victim may be entitled to compensation from the resort or from the companies that designed, manufactured and distributed the equipment or product.
