Antonio Brown Dropped by New England Patriots after Sexual Assault Charges

In another high-profile case of sexual assault accusations, the New England Patriots have released Antonio Brown less than two weeks after he left the Oakland Raiders.

Brown, a top wide receiver in the NFL and seven-time Pro Bowler, played 8 years with the Pittsburgh Steelers before being traded to the Raiders. After some off-the-field incidents that allegedly included skipping practices and verbal altercations with management – and without playing any regular-season games for the Raiders – the Patriots picked him up but let him go after he played in just one game.

Two Women Accused Brown of Sexual Assault

Brown’s former trainer accused Brown of sexual assault and filed a civil lawsuit in September 2019. Her claims include incidents in 2017 and 2018 where Brown allegedly exposed himself to her and raped her. Brown and his team have denied the allegations.

A separate accusation of sexual assault was made a week later by another woman who has yet to be identified.

Brown allegedly sent threatening text messages to one of the women. One day later, the Patriots cut him from the team.

Nike, the footwear and apparel manufacturing giant, has also cut ties with Brown.

The NFL made a statement following Brown’s release by the Patriots that discussed his classification as an unrestricted free agent and stated that they are vigorously investigating the multiple allegations. Their spokesperson also affirmed that Brown may be subject to discipline if the investigation finds any violations of law or league policies.
