The statistics are horrifying: Every 92 seconds, someone in America is sexually assaulted. Do the math – that works out to more than 321,000 victims age 12 and above every year. (statistics from the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network RAINN)

Every April is National Sexual Assault Month when we pause to consider the survivors of sexual violence. This year’s theme is Awareness to Action: Whether learning more about these dreadful crimes, sharing information or volunteering.

One way to exhibit Awareness to Action is to take action when you know that someone has been a victim of sexual violence. Here are some steps from RAINN that you can take to help a victim of sexual assault:

  •  Let the victim communicate with you. Be there for your family member, friend, colleague or acquaintance. Listen without judgment. These communication tips from RAINN can be helpful.

  • Urge the victim to get medical attention. Offer your support to go with him or her.

  • If the survivor plans to report the attack, offer your help in the conversation or visit to the authorities.

  • Encourage the victim to get support, but keep in mind that it is up to them to reach out. Share the National Sexual Assault Hotline that has both online chat and phone access. You can also connect with local support here. The New Jersey Sexual Assault Hotline is 800-601-7200.

  • Be a friend by understanding that it takes time to recover from this trauma. Gently urge them to take good care of themselves. This RAINN self-care guide can be helpful.

  • Be aware of the warning signs of suicide. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available 24/7 – telephone 800-273-8255.
