If your child is one of the thousands of young athletes across New Jersey who spends hours working with coaches in their sport, the last thing that you would expect would be to have your child exposed to sexual abuse.
Yet sadly many teen and child athletes have been abused by their coaches, whether during practice sessions, competitions or road trips to out-of-state sporting events. Coaches are not the only perpetrators of these heinous crimes in the amateur sporting arena, as we covered in our blog on former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar‘s sexual misconduct.
As a parent, do you wonder if any of those coaching your child has ever been banned from their sports because of allegations of sexual abuse, drug offenses or other crimes?
SafeSport Names 24 Coaches Tied to New Jersey Who Have Been Banned or Suspended
Parents and young athletes now have a reliable way to check which coaches have been banned because of sexual abuse or drug offense allegations.
The U.S. Center for SafeSport, created in 2017 to protect young athletes in Olympic sports, has published an online list of those banned by national organizations. The list includes coaches, athletes and others who, although prohibited to coach in these large organizations, may be coaching elsewhere.
24 coaches appearing on the SafeSport list have ties to New Jersey. They have been banned or suspended from many sports including diving, equestrian, figure skating, gymnastics, hockey, track and field and volleyball. You can find the New Jersey list here as reported by NJ Advance Media, which added information about the banned coaches from news reports, court records and other documents.
The current SafeSport list includes about 1,000 names across the country. The list is regularly updated with more sports and names from current charges as well as historical events.
Great Coach Creates Another Resource with Banned Coaches from Many Sources
Another organization has also created its own list compiled from information on banned coaches from SafeSport, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and governing bodies for various sports.
Great Coach strives for greater transparency and communication across the worlds of youth, amateur, scholastic and Olympic sports. The organization tracks coaches and training and background check verification.
